"The mother and child may have suffered, but luckily they didn’t because she didn’t take the advice.

He said should Noakes have been considered to have acted unprofessionally by giving Leenstra advice via Twitter, a dietician who responded to his tweet should also be guilty of the same offence.

Of course the trial is not really about a single tweet – that would be truly bizarre. It’s about scores of South Africans revolutionizing their health, using advice that is about the opposite of what they get from the Association for Dietetics in SA. So their former president lodged a complaint about a tweet… and that is what got this big thing going.

Let’s hope we get a sane end to it.

CAPE TOWN - Professor Tim Noakes has broken down at a hearing into his professional conduct.

The sport scientist is facing the Health Professions Council in a hearing after a complaint from the former president of the Association of Dietetics.

It relates to a tweet in which Noakes advised a mother to wean her baby onto a low carb/high fat diet.

The hearing was adjourned after Professor Noakes broke down in tears while delivering his testimony.

After a short break, proceedings were adjourned until tomorrow morning.

Earlier, Noakes told the hearing he did not give medical advice and was simply sharing information like he did with so many others on Twitter.

He said he did not believe a doctor-patient relationship existed with Pippa Linstra, because he was not a doctor and last had a stethoscope to his ears about 10 years ago.

Cape Town - The introduction of the US Department of Agriculture's food pyramid in 1977 led to an increase in the obesity rate, Professor Tim Noakes said at a hearing into his conduct on Friday.

"When we ask for dietary advice, we go to the US, which is the most obese nation in the world," he said.

"In the US, after 1976, obesity rates started to rise from 51 million to 111 million in 2010. A third of all Americans are rated obese."

Following the introduction of the pyramid, obesity rates rose in the US across all age groups which could not be related to genetics, he said.

"Something happened in 1977 to cause the increased obesity to occur. The Americans told people to consume more carbohydrates."

Since the rise in obesity rates, cancer had also followed suit, he claimed.

"It has been a tough time and people just don't understand what the financial cost of an action like this is. If I hadn't had these two men [advocate Michael van der Nest and advocate Ravin Ramdass], who are working pro bono, and my wife, it couldn't have been done."

Moments later Noakes's wife, Marilyn, told The Times that the experience had been "surreal".

"I never imagined we would be in a situation like this. I think their [the council's] main goal is to silence him and humiliate him," she said.

The hearing had affected her husband deeply, especially as he was still mourning the loss of his father, who died of type-2 diabetes, one of the conditions Noakes attributes to the high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet he is campaigning against.

Quoting obesity researcher Zoe Harcombe’s The Obesity Epidemic, the professor of exercise science and sports medicine said sugar met criteria for substance abuse and may be addictive for some individuals when consumed in a binge-like manner.

This conclusion was reinforced by the changes seen in the brain’s limbic system that were similar to those caused by drugs like cocaine and heroin.

“She concludes it supports the theory that in some circumstances intermittent access to sugar can lead to behaviour and neurochemical changes that resemble the changes [seen in] a substance of abuse.”

Sugar 'not good for your health'

Sugar needed to be removed from diets, he argued.

“We have no biological need for it. It’s not good for your health.”

Studies and evidence had found that an environment that caused obesity “did not creep up on us”.

“We created the environment. We tell people to avoid real food and eat processed food. The most profitable food on the planet is the carbohydrates provided by food manufacturers.”

Corporate funding affected research and advertising determined what people ate, Noakes said. Dietary advice by some researchers was directed by an industry interested in selling products, not the health of the nation.

“Who is recognised as the experts in research? Those who have the funding to carry it out. But who is the silent partner in the background and what is his interest?”

Cape Town – Weaning a child on rice cereal is its earliest introduction to junk food, Professor Tim Noakes said on Monday.

Testifying at a hearing into his conduct before the Health Professions Council of SA, the professor of exercise science and sports medicine said research had shown it was a product with very poor nutritional value.

He quoted research by Professor Alan Greene of Stanford University, who challenged rice cereal’s status as a staple food in the US.

Noakes quoted Greene as saying: "In fact, I think white rice cereal is the tap root of the child obesity epidemic. The problem is that it is, basically, like feedings kids a spoonful of sugar."

Noakes argued that an infant did not need one gram of carbohydrates.

The Real Meal Revolution, Noakes' book, promotes a low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) diet.

He was called before the council after a complaint was lodged by the former president of the Association for Dietetics in SA, Claire Julsing-Strydom.

'Real' food

The complaint was prompted by a tweet Noakes sent to a Pippa Leenstra after she asked him in a tweet if LCHF eating was advisable for breastfeeding mothers. She said she was worried that feeding babies dairy and cauliflower would give them wind.

Noakes advised her to wean her child on to LCHF foods, which he described as "real" foods.

His tweet read: "Baby doesn't eat the dairy and cauliflower. Just very healthy high fat breast milk. Key is to ween [sic] baby onto LCHF."

Noakes' response resulted in his being accused of giving unconventional and unscientific advice, and of unprofessional conduct for dispensing the advice via social media.

According to his LCHF diet, infants should be put on a diet of soft, cooked meat and full-fat dairy, dark green and orange vegetables, in addition to breast milk, from six months.

Not against dietary guidelines

This, he pointed out, was not against national and international dietary guidelines.

Noakes, however, disagreed with the South African dietary guidelines which advise that carbohydrates should also be introduced.

"Wholegrains are not making us healthier," he said.

All the foods in the South African nutritional guidelines were on the green list of foods in his book, he said.

Eating fat was important for babies as it provided essential fatty acids. Noakes pointed out that the World Health Organisation advised that infants’ diets contain 30% to 45% fat, which he said was considered a high fat diet locally.

“People were really fervent in their beliefs about this. Everyone was talking about it, and was either pro or against it,” she said. “I decided to see the funny side to this craze.”

In conclusion, Prof Noakes goes further: “There is no biological need for carbohydrate. In particular, sugar is not good for your health and should be completely removed from the diet, especially from the diet of infants.”

If the HPCSA hoped its hearing against UCT emeritus professor Tim Noakes on a charge of unprofessional conduct would shut him up, the opposite has happened.

The hearing, which resumes in October, has given Noakes a powerful global platform to disseminate and interrogate the vast body of scientific evidence both for and against low-carb, high-fat (LCHF, aka Banting).

LCHF is not yet mainstream, but is used worldwide by top specialists to enhance sports performance and treat obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, even dementia, which some specialists are calling “type 3 diabetes” because of its link with diet. In medical jargon, these are called non-communicable diseases (NCDs), a clumsy term for chronic ailments known as lifestyle diseases. Noakes told the hearing these are not diseases of lifestyle, but are shown to be diseases of nutrition.
