Palm oil comes from a tropical palm tree (elaeis guineensis—NOT the same as coconut palm trees), which is native to the tropical areas of Africa, where it grows wild. The palm oil palm was introduced to South East Asia in the early 1900s, and Malaysia is now the world leader in exports of palm oil. Being an introduced crop to Asia, they are mainly harvested from large plantations, which cannot grow the palm oil nuts organically. ... certified organic Virgin Palm Oil, however, is produced in West Africa where it has been grown and produced on small family farms for hundreds of years.... Our source is certified by the African Wildlife Society for preserving wildlife, and in 2002 was awarded in the World Summit for promoting sustainable agriculture. Child labor is not allowed, and there is a firm commitment to social values and the environment in West Africa.
In its natural state, palm oil is red in color due to a high concentration of carotenes and tocols. It is a traditional oil used for more than 5000 years in African countries, where small-scale family farms flourish. In non-tropical climates in cooler temperatures the oil tends to be orange, like a carrot.
