We found suggestive evidence for a protective role against increasing weight from whole grains, nuts, total fibre, high-fat dairy products and high scores in the Diet Quality Index. Likewise, there was suggestive evidence for fruit intake in protection against larger increases in waist circumference. Also suggestive evidence was found for high intake of meat and sweets and deserts in predicting more weight gain, and for refined grains and high energy density in predicting larger increases in waist circumference. The results suggested that the proportion of macronutrients in the diet was not important in prevention of obesity. In general, weight maintenance seems to be supported by eating plenty of fibre-rich foods and dairy products, and by reducing the intake of refined grains, meat and sugar-containing foods and drinks. The different effects of whole-grain and refined cereals speak for separating different types of cereals in dietary advice.
